Wednesday 1st September 2004
Summer is over,
Boys and girls are on their way
To school nº1 opening its doors
on a gentle, hot and sunny day
All dressed in black or white
Children bringing flowers in their hands
Shy smiles on their faces
As for them today is their knowledge day

Black soldiers hiding in the woods
Carrying mines and guns,
Wearing black hoods
burst into the school
Shouting and beating kids
Forced them to go to their gym hall
Opening fire without a word
to kill the ones trying to escape
As for them today is action and horror day

All this time
I've been wondering why
men and children mixed in the same war
Once the trial ends
There's no way to forget

All this time
wounds that never healed
Using children as human shields
I thought that ''Russians love their children too''

3 days in unsustainable heat
No water, eating flowers,
having no sleep.
Rooftop collapsing
Spetznaz's entering the school
10 hours before shooting ends
letting place to despair.
They say they came here to die
and leave pain as much as they can.

All this time
have you seen my brother?
Tell me what happened to my son?
Footprints in the dust
and toys on the floor.

I cry for those who
left a child behind.
When a child dies
we have all failed,
Cos we can't bring
them back in any way.

We may not be able to prepare the future for our children, but we can at least prepare our children for the future.

Comments

The most difficult song I had to write, specially for the lyrics. I finnaly ends this in Bruxelles in my hotel room in October 2013.

When this happen in 2004, I was terribly shocked and moved by all this and confused by the fact no-one is talking about this today despite all the pain remaining in Beslan...

Quote from Sting

The sentence "Russians love their children too" is a quote from Sting's song "Russians" :

In Europe and America, there's a growing feeling of hysteria
Conditioned to respond to all the threats
In the rhetorical speeches of the Soviets
Mr. Krushchev said we will bury you
I don't subscribe to this point of view
It would be such an ignorant thing to do
If the Russians love their children too

How can I save my little boy from Oppenheimer's deadly toy
There is no monopoly in common sense
On either side of the political fence
We share the same biology
Regardless of ideology
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too

There is no historical precedent
To put the words in the mouth of the President
There's no such thing as a winnable war
It's a lie we don't believe anymore
Mr. Reagan says we will protect you
I don't subscribe to this point of view
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too

We share the same biology
Regardless of ideology
What might save us, me, and you
Is if the Russians love their children too.

The meaning here in Beslan is of course that despite the fact they indeed love their chidren, terrorism has lead to kill a lot of them.
